Heading for Envision: State of Communities

Overview

In late 2023, LISC Houston embarked on a learning journey to deepen our understanding of local community development initiatives and opportunities. Several things became evident through that journey: communities want a platform to gather, share and learn from each other, there is a strong desire for better coordination within and across communities, and leaders would benefit tremendously from the support to engage with a broader array of industries. As a result of these findings, LISC Houston launched Envision: State of Communities – Dialog in 2024 as the inaugural citywide conference/convening focused on understanding the landscape of the community work being done throughout our region. The 2024 convening drew in nearly 200 leaders from throughout the Houston MSA region and focused discussions on housing, economic development, and community development with an impactful keynote speech by Dr. Ruth Simmons.

In 2025, we’ll be doing it again! On March 26, 2025, LISC Houston will host Envision: State of Communities - Neighborhoods Taking Action. The focus of this free, day-long conference is to uplift, shed light, and elevate the voices involved in affecting change deep within their neighborhoods across the City of Houston and Harris County.

Tell Us About the Work You’re Doing – Speaker Sessions!

And to make that happen, we’re turning to YOU! There will be six 60-minute breakout sessions. One of these could be yours!

Here’s where we invite you to share your ideas and work during Envision. Are you working on any of the following?

... Revitalizing underutilized or underdeveloped lots or buildings

... Helping your neighborhood build wealth (ex. community ownership, community cooperatives, etc.)

... Addressing homeownership challenges (heirs' property taxes, rising costs, sustained ownership, foreclosure, etc.)

... Creating an intersection between community organizing and resident advocacy

... Creating anti-displacement efforts and tackling gentrification

... Engaging communities in planning & decision-making

... Building or developing key collaborations and partnership

... Or, perhaps there’s something else we should consider? Tell us more…
